Online Master’s in Social Work Programs

What is an Online Master’s in Social Work?

Social work is an essential field that provides services to a wide range of people. Social workers provide  disadvantaged groups with support to help them improve their situations. Though social work licensure requirements vary by state, becoming a licensed social worker requires a master of social work degree (MSW).

Online master of social work degrees are becoming increasingly popular. As the needs of communities change, greater specialization in specific areas of social work are needed. Many universities have a school of social work, providing online, on-campus and hybrid classes with different concentration options. Many of these programs have been approved by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and some offer all of the advantages of on-campus programs. These can include internship opportunities, group work and career support. Some online social work programs provide a flexible and convenient way for people in many situations to receive their master’s degree in social work.

Types of Social Work Degrees

Students interested in social work have a few options when it comes to choosing degree programs. There are degrees available to become a social worker that offer different levels of expertise and specialization. Students can pursue a bachelor of social work (BSW) degree, master of social work degree (MSW) or a doctoral program in social work (DSW).

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW)

A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) is generally the first step towards a career in social work. These degrees will often include more general courses to fulfill any university requirements. During the latter part of a bachelor’s program, students begin to take more specialized classes covering core theories, strategies and the ethics of social work.

Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)

The next degree level available to social work students is a master’s degree in social work (MSW). Getting an MSW is required for many licensed social work positions and most state licensures. Though all MSW candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, acceptance to MSW programs does not require a BSW.

Upon completion of an accredited MSW program and passage of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam, students are prepared to become licensed in most states. The name of the license varies from state to state, but is often called a licensed master social worker (LMSW).  In order to work directly with clients in a therapeutic setting, graduates must get an additional license, often called licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) license in most states. Though specifics vary by state, LCSWs generally need to complete 3,000 to 4,000 hours of supervised clinical work after completing an accredited MSW program.

Doctoral Social Work Programs (DSW)

Though becoming a licensed social worker may not require a doctoral degree, there are many programs available at this level. There are two main categories of social work degrees at this level. A DSW is focused on clinical applications of social work. Alternatively, a PhD in social work is more focused on research and leads to careers in teaching and research. Doctorate programs generally take around 4 years to complete.

Types of Master’s in Social Work Classes

There are multiple formats that online degree programs can take. Some programs allow students to work entirely independent (asynchronously) and other online social work programs include live discussions and lectures (synchronous). Both options cover the same curriculum and offer students interactions with instructors and other students.

While live social work classes provide an experience that is more similar to that in a real classroom, asynchronous classes may provide greater flexibility for students with busy schedules. Understanding the differences between these formats and your personal needs and learning styles are essential when selecting an online MSW degree.

Support for Online MSW Students

While online classes may not provide the same direct interactions as physical classes, high-quality programs will include support directed towards online social work students. These resources give online master students the tools they need in order to succeed while working remotely. Though resources vary between online master programs, they generally include tutoring, online libraries, academic  journal access and ongoing career support -- accessing the same level of support as on-campus students.

Social Work Internship Placement Teams

Social work internship placement is an essential component of any MSW program. This is true for both on-campus and online MSW degrees. Though online learning provides a format for lecture and class learning, real-world experience in social work is essential. Therefore, most online MSW programs have an office with staff dedicated to helping their online social work students obtain placements in quality internships within their area.  Employees in the internship office will work with student’s local organizations to organize and structure these field experiences -- typically ranging from 900-1,200 hours.
